NCIC summons Peter Kaluma over Homabay remarks

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission, NCIC, has summoned Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma to appear before the commission over remarks allegedly linked to the violence that disrupted the Linda Mwananchi political rally in Homa Bay.

Kaluma is expected to appear before the commission in Nairobi on Wednesday, August 19, to assist with ongoing investigations into alleged hate speech and incitement.

The NCIC says it is investigating remarks attributed to the legislator during political activities in Homa Bay ahead of the rally.

The commission’s chairperson, Bishop Kepha Nyamweya, says the incident is a worrying indication of rising political intolerance and ethnic polarisation as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.

Nyamweya says every Kenyan has a constitutional right to travel anywhere in the country and sell their political ideas peacefully.

The commission says it wants those found responsible for hate speech, incitement or actions that contributed to the violence to be held accountable.

The Homa Bay incident involved road blockades, stone throwing and attacks as the Linda Mwananchi team, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo, toured the county.

The NCIC says political leaders have a responsibility to promote peaceful coexistence and avoid statements that could inflame tensions.

The commission is now calling on politicians and their supporters to exercise restraint as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.
