Kenya Reclaims Economic Crown as Ethiopia Surges Ahead

Kenya is East Africa’s largest economy again, but the victory comes with an uncomfortable twist: Ethiopia’s economy is growing almost twice as fast, even as it loses its position at the top.

Kenya has overtaken Ethiopia to become East Africa’s largest economy after five years of trailing its neighbour, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) October 2026 economic projections. However, the shift in rankings has less to do with Kenya’s faster economic growth and more to do with currency movements that have reduced the dollar value of Ethiopia’s economy.

According to the IMF figures, Kenya’s economy was valued at approximately $135.92 billion (KSh 17.57 trillion) in 2025, compared with Ethiopia’s $126.35 billion (approximately KSh 16.4 trillion).

For 2026, the IMF projects Kenya’s GDP to reach $151.15 billion (approximately KSh 19.6 trillion), while Ethiopia’s is projected at $127.15 billion (approximately KSh 16.5 trillion). These projections explain the figures circulating on social media.

However, the rankings do not tell the entire story. Ethiopia recorded real economic growth of 9.2 per cent in 2025, nearly double Kenya’s 4.6 per cent, according to the reported IMF figures. The depreciation of Ethiopia’s currency, the birr, significantly reduced the dollar value of its economic output, while the recovery of the Kenyan shilling helped lift Kenya’s valuation.

Kenya’s economic performance has nevertheless remained positive. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reported that the country’s economy grew by 4.6 per cent in 2025, supported by expansion across several sectors, including construction, agriculture, financial services and accommodation.

The distinction is important because having the largest economy does not automatically mean having the fastest-growing economy or the wealthiest citizens. GDP measures the overall value of goods and services produced, while GDP per capita and other indicators offer additional insight into average economic output and living standards.

Kenya’s return to the top of the regional rankings therefore marking a significant economic milestone, but it also raises questions about the sustainability of its growth and whether ordinary citizens will feel its benefits.
