African Music’s Global Growth Is Becoming a Bigger Business

African music is increasingly becoming part of the global recorded-music economy, with the latest industry figures showing strong growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s 2026 Global Music Report, recorded-music revenue in Sub-Saharan Africa grew by 15.2 percent in 2025, reaching US$120 million.

South Africa remained the region’s largest market, accounting for 78.1 percent of regional revenue. The growth comes as streaming continues to reshape the global music business. Worldwide recorded-music revenue reached US$31.7 billion in 2025, with streaming accounting for 69.6 percent of total recorded-music revenue.

For African artists, digital platforms have made it easier to reach listeners outside their domestic markets. Music produced in African cities can now be discovered by audiences in Europe, North America, Asia and other parts of the continent without relying entirely on traditional radio and physical distribution.

But increased international attention also creates new challenges. The modern music industry is built around much more than the performer. Songwriters, producers, recording engineers, managers, publishers, distributors and other professionals all play a role in turning a song into a commercial product.

Copyright and royalty systems are therefore becoming increasingly important. As music moves across borders through digital platforms, creators need systems that ensure they receive the income associated with the use of their work.Technology is also creating new challenges. IFPI has identified artificial intelligence and streaming fraud among the issues likely to shape the next phase of the global music industry. The growth of African music also has implications beyond recording revenue.

International tours, concerts and festivals generate work for event organisers, sound engineers, lighting companies, photographers, security firms and hospitality businesses. This means that a successful music industry can support a much wider economic ecosystem.

The challenge for African markets is to ensure that rising global demand translates into sustainable careers and stronger businesses rather than benefiting only a small number of successful artists. The latest figures suggest that the market is moving in the right direction.

The next step is building the infrastructure copyright systems, professional management, investment and distribution networks that allows more creators to benefit.African music has already demonstrated its ability to cross borders. Its next achievement could be turning that global cultural influence into a stronger and more sustainable creative economy.
