World Leaders Clash At UNGA

The world is fixed on New York as the 81st UN General Assembly turns into a showcase of rival visions, with walkouts, warnings and open arguments over war and diplomacy.

U.S. President Donald Trump set the tone with a combative address threatening to “annihilate” Iran if no nuclear deal is reached, while defending Washington’s war against Tehran and claiming he has settled eight global conflicts since returning to office.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian hit back the next day, accusing the U.S. of a “bullying mentality” and rejecting surrender, as he held up photos of children killed in the war and insisted Iran’s peaceful nuclear program is non-negotiable.

The U.S. delegation walked out as he began.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced the opposite protest. Dozens of delegates walked out when he took the podium to defend Israel’s actions in Gaza, prompting him to call them “moral cowards” and thank President Trump as a partner.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking Saturday, accused Europe of doing “everything” to thwart peace talks that the Trump administration wants, vowing Russia’s objectives in Ukraine will be achieved.

For Africa and Kenya, the fallout is real. Escalation in the Strait of Hormuz means costlier fuel and shipping, while the Ukraine war keeps grain and fertilizer prices volatile.

The UN’s divisions also highlight why Nairobi is pushing for Security Council reform and a stronger African voice.
