Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed claims that he is funding opposition activities aimed at destabilising President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking during the 23rd anniversary commemoration of the death of former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Kenyatta said he was not actively involved in politics, contrary to claims made by his successor.
The former president also criticised the recent attacks and disruption witnessed at opposition rallies, warning that such incidents threaten Kenya’s democratic space.
We are a democratic society, and those democratic ideals were fought for hard by the man, among others, who was honoured today,” Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta called on the government to allow Kenyans to freely exercise their democratic right to choose their preferred leaders ahead of next year’s General Election.
He also urged opposition leaders to put aside their differences and unite behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto at the ballot.
His remarks come amid heightened political tensions and renewed debate over the state of Kenya’s democratic space ahead of the 2027 elections.
