Nairobi has formally submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, seeking to make Kenya the first African country to stage the sport’s flagship global event and turning the country’s long-standing athletics reputation into an ambition to host the world’s best athletes at home.
The Nairobi bid was formally submitted as Kenya seeks the right to host the championships in 2029. If successful, the capital would become the first African city to stage the World Athletics Championships.
The bid represents a major opportunity for Kenya, a country whose global sporting identity has been built largely around its extraordinary success in athletics.
Kenyan runners have dominated many middle- and long-distance events at Olympic Games, World Championships and major international competitions.
Nairobi’s campaign now seeks to extend that influence from the track to the organization of a major global sporting event.
The Kenyan government has committed its support to the bid, including backing for the infrastructure, security and organizational requirements needed to stage a championship of such scale.
Nairobi is not, however, the only city seeking the event.
The Kenyan capital faces competition from established European sporting cities, including London, Rome and Munich.
The competition means Kenya must convince World Athletics that Nairobi has the facilities, transport systems, accommodation, security arrangements and organizational capacity required for an event involving athletes and officials from around the world.
The potential benefits extend beyond sport. Hosting the championships could bring thousands of visitors to Kenya, increase international exposure for Nairobi and create opportunities for tourism, hospitality, transport and other sectors of the economy.
It would also carry major symbolic importance for African athletics.
Africa has produced some of the world’s greatest track-and-field athletes, but the continent has had limited opportunities to host the sport’s biggest global championships.
A successful Nairobi bid would change that history.
The proposal therefore goes beyond simply bringing an athletics competition to Kenya.
It represents an attempt to establish Nairobi as a major international sporting destination and demonstrate that Africa can host the highest level of global athletics.
World Athletics is expected to select the host city in September 2026.
For Kenya, the decision will determine whether its celebrated athletics tradition can culminate in an unprecedented opportunity: welcoming the world’s leading track-and-field athletes to Nairobi for the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
