Kenyan Saccos added 480,000 new members last year, latest data shows, pointing to growing confidence in the sector.The latest Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) SACCO Supervision Annual Report shows that total membership in regulated Saccos stood at 7.87 million in 2025, up from 7.39 million in 2024.
Deposit-taking savings and credit cooperative societies contributed significantly to the growth, with membership increasing by 6.93 percent to 7.36 million. Membership in non-withdrawable deposit-taking Saccos rose by 2.22 percent to 526,115.
The regulator attributed the increase in membership of non-withdrawable deposit-taking Saccos to three additional societies that were authorised to undertake the business, as well as sustained member mobilisation strategies by other Saccos.However, the report shows that dormant accounts in deposit-taking Saccos increased by 15.75 percent to 1.69 million.
SASRA said the high proportion of dormant members in the regulated Sacco sector calls for concerted efforts to reactivate them, including the development and rollout of suitable financial products and services.
