Norway’s King Harald V is facing renewed health concerns after his condition deteriorated over the weekend, according to the Royal Palace. The 89-year-old monarch remains at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, where he is being treated for a bacterial infection in his blood.
In a statement, the Royal Family said the King had responded to antibiotic treatment despite the deterioration. He will remain in hospital and is expected to stay on leave from his royal duties until further notice.
King Harald was first admitted to hospital about a week ago after becoming unwell. His latest health setback has raised further concerns about the monarch, who has experienced several medical problems in recent years.
Earlier this year, the King was hospitalised shortly after his birthday while on holiday with Queen Sonja in Tenerife. He was treated for an infection and dehydration before returning to Norway.
In 2024, King Harald was also admitted to hospital while visiting Malaysia after his heart rate dropped to a dangerously low level. Doctors fitted him with a temporary pacemaker before he returned to Norway, where he later underwent surgery to receive a permanent pacemaker.
Despite his recurring health problems, King Harald has continued to carry out his constitutional and ceremonial responsibilities when his health has allowed. The Royal Palace has not given a specific date for his return to official duties, saying he will remain on leave until further notice.
