Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has launched a fresh attack on the Kenya Kwanza administration, insisting he has a duty to hold the government accountable despite having served as Deputy President.
Speaking at a public event, Gachagua said his criticism of the administration stems from the mandate Kenyans gave him through the ballot, arguing that elected leaders have a responsibility to scrutinize the government’s performance.
He accused President William Ruto’s administration of presiding over deteriorating security, alleging that the independence of state institutions and constitutional commissions has been undermined and that some are being used to advance political and personal interests.
Gachagua also criticized the government’s economic policies, citing what he described as excessive borrowing, increased taxation and rising expenditure in the Presidency. He further accused the administration of failing to deliver on key campaign promises, including the construction of dams.
The former Deputy President also argued that recent political decisions, including the inclusion of the ODM party in government, have not improved the country’s direction.
Looking ahead to the 2027 General Election, Gachagua said a DCP administration would adopt a different approach to governance. He pledged to abolish the Housing Levy and reduce the tax burden on Kenyans if elected.
The one-term slogan is not a slogan of anger; it is a verdict on performance,” Gachagua said.
