Gachagua proposes role for Uhuru in opposition unity
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has proposed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta could play a role in bringing together opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on the growing divisions within the opposition, Gachagua suggested that Uhuru could serve as an elder and mediator if opposition leaders fail to agree on a single presidential candidate.
Gachagua said the former president’s experience in national politics could help facilitate discussions among the different opposition factions and provide a platform for leaders to reach an agreement.
The proposal comes amid continued efforts by opposition leaders to form a united political front ahead of the 2027 elections.
Several opposition figures have been holding consultations on how to coordinate their political activities, with the question of who should lead a possible alliance remaining a key issue.
Uhuru Kenyatta, who served as Kenya’s president from 2013 to 2022, has previously called on opposition leaders to put aside their differences and work together.
