Forget Dating Apps , Ask The Government

Forget swiping left and right , the government now wants a say in who you might date. Singapore has launched a matchmaking pilot for government workers aged 21 to 35, using personal preferences, interests and values to algorithmically pair participants with potential partners. Called FirstDate, the initiative puts the state in an unusual role, not just providing public services, but helping young adults navigate their search for love. The initiative comes as Singapore faces very low fertility and an ageing population, although GovTech describes FirstDate as a service to help singles build meaningful connections rather than simply a birth-rate programme.

The pilot uses Singapore’s national digital identity system, Singpass, to verify participants. Eligible users complete a questionnaire covering their interests, habits and values, after which an algorithm identifies a potential match. Unlike conventional dating apps that allow users to swipe through numerous profiles, FirstDate gives participants one potential match per matchmaking cycle.

The matching system is based on the Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage algorithm, a mathematical method developed by mathematicians David Gale and Lloyd Shapley for solving stable matching problems. Shapley and economist Alvin Roth later received the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for work involving market-design theory and stable matching.

FirstDate also offers suggested activities for matched participants and allows them to provide feedback after their experience. The platform says the pilot is intended to support singles aged 21–35 in their dating journey and promote more thoughtful connections.

The initiative has nevertheless attracted mixed reactions, with some observers questioning the idea of a government agency becoming involved in citizens’ dating lives, while others have welcomed the structured alternative to conventional dating applications.

The programme comes against the backdrop of Singapore’s demographic challenges. The country’s total fertility rate fell to 0.87 in 2025, down from 0.97 in 2024, according to reports citing Singapore’s official population data. The government has introduced various measures aimed at supporting marriage and parenthood, but FirstDate represents a more unusual approach: using technology to facilitate relationships among young public-sector workers.

For now, FirstDate remains a pilot, meaning its effectiveness in helping people form lasting relationships has yet to be established. The experiment puts Singapore at the intersection of technology, dating and population policy , raising an unusual question about how far governments should go in addressing changing patterns of relationships and family formation.
