Elderly Couple Accused of Killing Son-in-law
An elderly couple in California have been arrested and accused of fatally shooting their son-in-law in a parking lot near a busy park.
Police found 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey with multiple gunshot wounds at the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, on Saturday afternoon. Officers discovered his body in the parking lot at about 3 p.m.Police identified McKinsey’s in-laws, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, as suspects in the killing.
Witnesses told local media that the couple allegedly took turns shooting McKinsey before police arrested them nearby. The shooting happened in a public area where families and children were present. Witness Kevin Stein told local media that the parking lot was usually crowded on Saturdays and described the shooting as shocking.
McKinsey was an employee of The New York Times, where he served as director of engineering for New York Times Games. He had worked for the company since 2023, according to a Times spokesperson.
The killing comes months after McKinsey was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse. Court documents reportedly alleged that he struck his wife’s six-year-old son and that a two-year-old child was left unattended while he went shopping.
McKinsey had pleaded not guilty and was released on conditions that included completing parenting classes. Police have not established a motive for the shooting or confirmed whether the earlier child-abuse allegations were connected to the killing.
