Eighteen Counties Face High El Nino Risk

Government agencies have placed 18 counties on high alert ahead of the expected El Nino rains, warning residents to prepare for flooding, landslides and displacement.

The counties identified as most vulnerable are Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Mombasa, Kwale, Kisumu, Busia, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Turkana, Baringo, West Pokot, Narok, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera.

In addition, Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa have been listed as high-risk urban centres due to poor drainage, clogged rivers, and dense populations that could worsen the impact.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the rains could cause major rivers to burst their banks, cut off roads, and destroy crops and homes in low-lying areas.

Coastal counties face the risk of storm surges, while western and Rift Valley counties are prone to landslides on steep slopes, county commissioners and disaster teams have been directed to activate emergency plans.

Officials are urging residents in flood-prone zones to move to higher ground early, clear drainage around homes, and avoid crossing swollen rivers.

“We are asking people not to wait until water enters their houses,” one official said. “Early action saves lives.”

Relief agencies say they are pre-positioning food, clean water, medicine, blankets and rescue boats in the 18 counties. Schools and churches in risky areas have been identified as temporary shelters.

The National Disaster Operation Centre will coordinate response and share daily weather updates.

Residents have been advised to monitor alerts from KMD and local authorities, and to report emergencies through county hotlines.

While the memories of past El Nino destruction are still fresh, authorities say preparedness this time could make the difference between loss and survival.
