Priest Dies During Livestreamed Mass
In a heartbreaking accident witnessed live by his congregation, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari lost his life while doing what he loved most leading Mass.
The beloved parish priest of Perpetuo Socorro Church, also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil, was celebrating evening Mass on Saturday when tragedy struck.
About 27 minutes into the service, which was being livestreamed on social media, a large wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind the altar suddenly detached and fell directly onto him.
Parishioners screamed for help as Father Patricio collapsed onto the altar.
The broadcast continued as worshippers rushed to free him from beneath the heavy cross.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death on Sunday, saying he had “departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory”.
Father Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), an order founded in 1732 serving in 80 countries.
Colleagues remembered him not just as a priest, but as a schoolmate, friend, and shepherd whose final moments were spent in service.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, with no evidence of foul play yet reported.
