Charity Scam Lands Singapore Woman in Jail Over Elderly Donations

A fundraising campaign supposedly meant to feed the elderly has turned into a cautionary tale about charity fraud after a Singapore woman used donations intended to buy eggs for nursing home residents to finance personal holidays.

Anna Goh Li Bing, 39, was sentenced to two weeks in jail after pleading guilty to criminal breach of trust over donations she collected under the pretext of buying eggs for elderly people .

Court proceedings revealed that Goh collected more than S$10,163 from 134 donors between October 3 and November 10, 2023. She had appealed for contributions through a Facebook group whose members promoted charitable causes, leading donors to believe their money would help provide eggs to elderly people and nursing home residents.

However, instead of using the money entirely for its intended purpose, Goh diverted the funds to finance personal holidays and support her husband’s business, according to the reports.

The deception came under scrutiny after donors received a digital letter, purportedly from a senior citizens’ home, claiming that 850 trays of eggs had been delivered. The letter, dated November 7, 2023, was forged. When donors checked with the home, they discovered that the promised delivery had not taken place.

The subsequent investigation exposed the misuse of donations and led to criminal proceedings against Goh.

Court records further indicated that Goh made partial efforts to fulfil the original promise. Between November 2023 and March 2026, she delivered 4,500 eggs valued at approximately S$922.50 to the home. She also transferred an additional S$300 in May 2026. Despite these efforts, more than S$8,940 remained unrecovered at the time of reporting.

Goh pleaded guilty to one count of criminal breach of trust. A separate forgery charge was taken into consideration during sentencing. Her lawyer reportedly sought leniency, citing her family responsibilities, guilty plea and lack of previous criminal convictions. The court ultimately imposed a two-week jail term.

The case highlights the risks associated with informal online fundraising, where appeals built around vulnerable groups can attract contributions without adequate safeguards to ensure that the money reaches its intended beneficiaries.

It also raises concerns about the impact of charity fraud on legitimate community initiatives. When donors discover that their generosity has been exploited, they may become reluctant to support other appeals, potentially affecting elderly people and organisations that genuinely depend on public contributions.

For donors, the case underscores the importance of verifying fundraising appeals directly with the named organisations, requesting transparent records of expenditure and exercising caution when money is collected through social media.

Goh’s conviction and sentence demonstrate the legal consequences of misusing charitable contributions. However, the case also leaves a broader question about how online communities can better protect well intentioned donors from fraudulent appeals.
