Mt.Kenya political battle intensifies

The political battle for influence in the Mt Kenya region is intensifying as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is seeking to consolidate his support through the Democracy for Citizens Party, DCP, while President William Ruto’s camp continues efforts to maintain its influence in the region.

The contest has been boosted by the recent Ol Kalou by-election, where the DCP emerged victorious. The result has given Gachagua renewed political momentum and strengthened his argument that he remains an influential force in Mt Kenya politics.

Gachagua has also been taking his political mobilisation beyond his traditional Nyeri base, including into Nakuru, as he seeks to expand the DCP’s presence and build a wider political network.

However, political analysts caution that the Ol Kalou result alone cannot be used to determine Gachagua’s overall influence across Mt Kenya.

The region remains politically divided, with different leaders advancing competing interests.President Ruto’s administration is also working to maintain its support in the region, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki playing a significant role in the government’s political strategy.

The situation has further exposed differences between Mt Kenya West and Mt Kenya East, with some leaders calling for greater political recognition and representation for the eastern side of the region.

Other influential figures, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, could also play a role in determining the region’s political direction as the 2027 elections approach.

The battle is therefore expected to intensify in the coming months, with political parties stepping up grassroots mobilisation, recruitment and public meetings.

The big question now is whether Mt Kenya will rally behind one political formation or remain divided among competing leaders and parties.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the region’s political direction could have a significant impact on the wider presidential contest.
