Financial Pressures Threaten Women’s Football Careers.
Nearly half of the women footballers surveyed by global players’ union FIFPRO are considering retiring earlier than planned, raising concerns about the financial and mental-health pressures facing players despite the growing popularity of women’s football.

According to a report published by Reuters on Monday, 12 October 2026, 49 per cent of the surveyed players were considering ending their careers sooner than expected, with financial difficulties and mental-health challenges among their major concerns.
The findings highlight the difficulties some players continue to face in sustaining professional careers, despite increased visibility and investment in the women’s game.

Financial insecurity can make it difficult for players to plan their futures, while mental-health challenges may affect their well-being and ability to perform consistently.
The report raises questions about the support available to women footballers and the responsibility of clubs and football authorities to provide better working conditions.

The findings underline the need for stronger player welfare measures to help women footballers build longer, healthier and more sustainable careers.
