YouTube Rewrites the Rules on Views

YouTube is changing the way it counts video views, with views set to register as soon as a video begins playing or a user enters a live broadcast.

The new system, announced by YouTube on Monday, will take effect on August 24. The move is aimed at creating a more consistent view-counting system across different video formats on the platform.

YouTube said creators have called for greater clarity in understanding how many people are actually exposed to their content. The platform previously used different systems to count views across its formats, including a separate approach for Shorts.

Under the new system, the public view count could increase significantly, particularly for videos that viewers watch only briefly. This has raised concerns that public view counts may become less reliable as an indicator of a video’s popularity or audience engagement.

However, YouTube will retain its previous measurement under a new name, “Engaged views.” The metric will remain available to creators through YouTube Analytics and will show how many viewers continued watching after the video began.

The company said the change will not affect creators’ earnings or their eligibility for monetization through the YouTube Partner Program.

The move follows similar practices by platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, which count a view once a video begins playing.

It also comes shortly after YouTube announced stricter monetization requirements for new creators. Under the proposed changes, creators will need to meet higher thresholds for watch hours or Shorts views before qualifying to earn money from ads and subscriptions.

The changes have attracted criticism from some creators and users, who argue that the higher monetization thresholds could make it more difficult for emerging creators to enter and remain in YouTube’s Partner Program.
