A 22-year-old interior design student was allegedly sexually assaulted by a security guard on the terrace of a residential building in Jodhpur, India, after she went upstairs for a walk on Saturday night.
According to police, the woman was approached by the guard, identified as 27-year-old Dharm Singh. When she reportedly rejected his advances, he allegedly attacked her and restrained her with a wire around her neck before sexually assaulting her.
The accused had reportedly been working as a security guard at the residential society for only six days before the alleged attack. Police said Singh fled the scene after taking the student’s mobile phone and locking her on the terrace.
The woman subsequently raised an alarm, prompting residents living on lower floors to come to her aid. She was rescued and taken to hospital, where police were informed about the alleged assault.
Her physical condition was reported to be stable, although she is said to be experiencing severe psychological trauma following the incident.
Police launched a search for the suspect and arrested Singh in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault are continuing.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of women living in residential societies and the screening of security personnel employed to protect residents.
