Senegal, Morocco Await Verdict in AFCON Title Dispute
Senegal and Morocco are awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following a dispute over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, a case that has raised serious questions about football governance in Africa.
Senegal originally won the final 1–0 after extra time. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) later overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory, prompting Senegal to challenge the decision.

Senegal’s appeal seeks to reverse CAF’s ruling and restore the result achieved on the pitch. The case has attracted widespread attention because of its potential impact on the competition’s official records and the credibility of African football’s governing institutions.
The dispute followed a dramatic final in which Senegal secured victory through a goal in extra time. The subsequent administrative decision changed the outcome, leaving the two nations on opposite sides of a controversy that extended beyond the match itself.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, which handles disputes involving sports organisations and athletes, is expected to examine the appeal before issuing its decision.
The final ruling could determine which country is officially recognised as the champion of the tournament and may influence how similar disputes are handled in future competitions.
For Senegal, the case represents an attempt to overturn the decision against the team. For Morocco, the ruling awarded by CAF remains the basis of its claim to the title pending the outcome of the appeal.
