Putin Warns of Retaliation over Russian Vessel Seizures
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia will respond if European countries seize Russian merchant vessels, describing such action as “piracy and banditry.”
The warning comes as the European Union increases pressure on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, expanding sanctions against hundreds of vessels and carrying out checks on some ships and their crews.
Several European governments are considering tougher maritime measures against vessels suspected of helping Russia evade sanctions. Putin said that if such measures lead to the seizure of Russian ships, Moscow would be forced to respond in kind.
The comments highlight growing tensions between Russia and European countries over maritime enforcement and sanctions linked to the war in Ukraine. The situation could further increase pressure on shipping routes and relations between Moscow and the EU.
