The English Premier League moved into Matchweek 3 with several exciting encounters producing goals, drama and crucial points as the early-season race began to take shape.
Liverpool opened the weekend on Friday with a statement 2–0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road, with Swedish striker Alexander Isak proving the difference-maker.
Isak pounced on goal passes to strike the Reds ahead in the seventh minute before finding the net again in the ninth, leaving Ipswich with no answer as Liverpool claimed full authority and all three points. The victory also gave Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool their first win of the 2026/27 campaign.
Saturday brought another tough assignment as Manchester City faced newly promoted Coventry City, who won the Championship title last season.
The visitors were hoping to cause a surprise, but the Citizens had other ideas. Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo swung in a perfect pass for Haaland, who rose to meet it and sent a bullet-like header into the net in the 26th minute.
That single moment proved enough to settle the contest, handing Manchester City all three points at the Etihad Stadium. The result also kept City unbeaten in the league as they headed towards Matchweek 4 alongside Hull City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Roberto De Zerbi’s side travelled to City Ground to face Nottingham Forest, desperate to get their season moving after a difficult start.
Spurs had collected zero points from their opening two matches against Brentford and Newcastle and were searching for their first goal of the 2026/27 campaign.
They came close, but Marmoush’s strike went wide.
Forest then appeared to have broken the deadlock in the second half when N. Williams found the net, only for the goal to be cancelled because of offside. With neither side able to produce a decisive finish, the contest ended goalless, finally giving Tottenham their first point of the new season.
Sunday delivered another gripping encounter as Everton hosted Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The first half was fiercely competitive, with both sides throwing plenty of shots towards goal but neither able to break the deadlock.
The drama arrived after the interval when Bryan Mbeumo found the net after a pass from Mainoo, driving into the 18-yard area before striking the ball past Pickford to put the Red Devils ahead in the 46th minute.
Everton refused to fold, however, and 36 minutes later George restored parity with an assist from Hackney.
United struck again in the 88th minute when Šeško powered a header into the net assist from Shaw, seemingly putting the Red Devils on course for victory.
But Everton had one final twist in store. Deep into the dying minutes, Maitland-Niles brought the hosts level at 2–2 after receiving a pass from Mazraoui, snatching a point from a dramatic encounter.
The weekend was then capped by its biggest match, as defending champions Arsenal welcomed London rivals Chelsea for a highly anticipated derby.
The World Champions came flying out of the blocks and took control in the second minute when Rogers scored from Hato’s assist, leaving Arsenal facing an early setback.
The Gunners responded 23 minutes later when Havertz restored parity from an assist by Rice, sending the two sides into half-time locked at 1–1.
Arsenal returned after the break with relentless pressure on the Blues’ defence, and their persistence finally paid off when captain Ødegaard produced the decisive second goal after a beautiful pass from Tzolis.
Arsenal completed the comeback to secure all three points, ending a dramatic Matchweek 3 with a powerful reminder that the defending champions are ready to fight to retain the league title back-to-back.
