A daring smuggling attempt at Nairobi’s airport ended in handcuffs.
Two women were arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after a multi-agency team foiled their plan to sneak 658 grams of suspected gold to Dubai.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations says the suspects, Mahamed Shukri Abdullahi and Sabriye Farhiyo Hussein, were intercepted in the early hours, as they prepared to board an Emirates flight.
During a search, officers found a 541gram gold bar cleverly concealed in Abdullahi’s hair, wrapped with a hairband and tucked beneath her hijab.
Her accomplice had hidden a 116.79gram gold pellet inside her bra.DCI said the total haul weighed approximately 658 grams.
The duo was taken into custody pending arraignment as detectives probe the source of the gold and whether they are couriers for a wider smuggling network.
Kenya remains a transit hub for illicit minerals headed to Dubai.
