What looked like a simple lunch delivery turned into a failed jailbreak at Ruai Police Station in Nairobi.
Police are holding 18-year-old Christine Njoki Gitau, who allegedly tried to smuggle a pair of pliers and shears into the cells hidden inside a container of rice and beef.
She walked into the station reception around 4 p.m. on September 15, saying she had brought food for three friends in custody.
Officers carried out a routine inspection before handing over the meal and found the tools buried beneath the food.
The three remandees Emmanuel Bosire, Brian Gatheru Nderitu and Ismail Bosire are facing serious charges including robbery with violence and gang rape.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, they allegedly ran an anonymous TikTok page to lure young women to meetings before attacking and robbing them.
Gitau was immediately arrested and placed in custody. The plate of food is now central to investigations into whether she acted alone or as part of a wider plan.
The DCI has warned that aiding or attempting to aid an escape from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence.
