Grief has struck Jomvu, Mombasa, after a perimeter wall of a container freight station collapsed onto a nearby house, killing a father and his son following heavy rains pounding the area.
The tragedy happened when the rain soaked wall gave way and came crashing down on the family house, trapping the three inside. The father and one son died on the spot under the heavy debris.
Mombasa Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed the incident, saying another son survived but sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Neighbours who rushed to the scene described frantic efforts to pull the victims from the rubble with bare hands as the rain continued to pour.Police and emergency teams later joined the rescue.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination.
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of perimeter walls around freight stations and warehouses in Jomvu, many of which border residential homes.
Police have launched investigations and urged residents living near such walls to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to weaken structures across the county.
