Five families were thrown into mourning early Monday morning after a horrific crash claimed five lives at Kikopey along the busy Nakuru Nairobi highway.
The accident happened around midnight when a private car heading from Nakuru towards Nairobi collided head on with a bus that was travelling in the opposite direction.
According to Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio, the private car’s driver was attempting to overtake other vehicles when the fatal collision occurred.
All five victims were occupants of the small car that died on the spot. Police confirmed that no one in the bus was injured.
The tragedy adds to the growing list of deadly accidents on this stretch, which is known as a dangerous black spot for night travel and risky overtaking.
Police moved the bodies to the Gilgil Sub-County mortuary where they are awaiting identification by their families.
The wreckage of both vehicles has been towed to Gilgil Police Station as officers work to restore normal traffic flow.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution, avoid dangerous overtaking, and observe traffic rules, especially when driving at night.
