Homa Bay After Effects

Homa Bay town is counting the cost of violent political clashes that left two people dead and 53 others injured, according to accounts from the scene.

By Monday morning, burnt-out vehicles, stones and shattered glass remained along several roads, offering a grim reminder of the violence that rocked the town on Sunday evening.

At least six vehicles were torched, while others were vandalised as clashes escalated.

Journalists caught up in the violence have also recounted harrowing experiences, saying groups of suspected goons mounted roadblocks, questioned them about their political affiliations and attempted to take their work equipment.

Residents and those who witnessed the clashes have accused police of failing to contain the violence, raising fresh concerns over political intolerance and the safety of civilians during political activities.

The violence has also hit the local business community.

Management of Homa Bay Tourist Hotel Ltd, a lakeside hotel located off Pier Road, says the Saturday night invasion caused losses estimated at up to Sh30 million.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service says 37 people have been arrested in connection with the unrest.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga also said one police officer died after losing control of a police vehicle, an incident that reportedly left five other officers injured.

The latest violence has renewed concerns over political intolerance and the ability of security agencies to protect residents, businesses and journalists during politically charged events.
