Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged Kenya’s youth to move beyond slogans and turn their energy into votes ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a recent engagement, Gachagua acknowledged the loud voice of young Kenyans online and in the streets, particularly around the “wantam” chants that have gained traction.
But he said noise alone will not bring change.“For sure, you have the numbers. But shouting ‘wantam!’ is not enough; you must register and come out and vote,” Gachagua told the youth.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader has in recent months been leading campaigns to mobilize young voters, arguing that real political power lies at the ballot.
He has repeatedly urged Gen Z to take the lead in registering, saying “the tool of change is the voting card”.
Gachagua said the opposition is banking on a new youth vote block to shape the outcome of the next election.
He also warned that staying home and expecting change to come will not work.IEBC data shows over 1.3 million new voters had registered by mid-April 2026, with a spike largely attributed to first-time young voters.
“ You have shown courage and determination, but you must take a step further,” he added.
