Did you know that a group of British teenagers once came up with an idea for a condom that could change colour when exposed to certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
The concept, called S.T.EYE, was designed to give users a visible warning that an infection might be present, potentially allowing them to seek medical attention earlier and more privately.
The idea was developed in 2015 by Daanyaal Ali, Muaz Nawaz and Chirag Shah, students at Isaac Newton Academy in Ilford, London, and won the health category at the TeenTech Awards.
The proposed technology was based on the idea of using molecules that could react with substances associated with particular infections.
If the reaction occurred, the condom would theoretically produce a different colour depending on the infection detected.
The proposed colours included green for chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple for human papillomavirus (HPV) and blue for syphilis.
The students said their goal was to make STI detection easier and encourage people to take action without immediately relying on invasive medical procedures.
The concept attracted attention because many STIs can have few or no obvious symptoms, meaning a person may unknowingly have an infection and pass it to a partner.
Earlier awareness and testing can therefore play an important role in sexual health.
The teenagers’ idea attempted to combine protection and detection in one product, potentially turning a familiar contraceptive into an early-warning tool.
However, S.T.EYE was a student concept, not a medically approved STI test or a commercially available condom.
Reports at the time described it as hypothetical, and turning such an idea into a real medical device would require extensive scientific testing to determine whether it could accurately detect infections, avoid false results and remain safe for users.
The idea nevertheless demonstrated how young innovators can approach major public-health problems from unexpected angles.
Rather than waiting for symptoms or a conventional test, the proposed S.T.EYE concept imagined a simple visual warning that could prompt someone to seek professional testing and treatment.
For now, a colour-changing S.T.EYE condom should not be mistaken for an available STI-testing method.
