President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to intervene in a legal dispute over plans to build a $400 million ballroom at the White House.
The emergency request was filed after lower courts repeatedly ruled that Trump needed approval from Congress before moving forward with the massive project.
The planned ballroom is being constructed at the site of the former East Wing of the White House. The project has faced legal challenges over whether the president has the authority to proceed without congressional approval.
Last week, a federal appeals court in Washington, DC, ruled that Trump lacked the authority to unilaterally pursue the project and ordered construction work to stop.
However, the appeals court paused enforcement of its decision for 14 days, giving the Trump administration time to seek intervention from the Supreme Court.
The dispute now places the Supreme Court at the centre of the controversy, with the justices expected to consider whether Trump can legally continue construction without approval from Congress.
