Panic gripped workers at Mombasa Maize Millers factory in Majengo after a massive blaze tore through the plant, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of shillings.
The fire broke out mid-morning in one of the production sections and spread quickly, fueled by stored grain, packaging materials, and milling machinery.
Thick smoke could be seen billowing over the industrial area as employees rushed out.
County firefighters responded with several engines and were joined by Kenya Ports Authority crews.
It took hours to bring the flames under control and stop them from spreading to nearby warehouses.
“We heard an alarm, then saw smoke everywhere. We ran out with nothing,” said one worker who escaped unhurt,fortunately, no casualties were reported.
All staff were accounted for after the evacuation.Authorities suspect an electrical fault may have triggered the fire, but investigations are ongoing.
The cause will be confirmed after a full assessment by fire and electrical experts.
Mill management said the damage is extensive, with processing lines, raw grain stores, and finished products all affected.
A team will evaluate the extent of the losses before announcing a recovery and reopening plan.County officials praised the quick response that prevented further destruction.
“If the fire had reached the neighboring godowns, the losses would have been far worse,” a fire officer noted.
Business owners in the area expressed concern over potential maize flour supply disruptions, but the management assured customers that alternative arrangements are being considered.
The incident adds to growing calls for stricter fire safety audits in Mombasa’s industrial zone.
