President William Ruto has told Kenyans to drop the “watchman” label, insisting that private security personnel must be recognized as trained professionals, not casual guards.
Speaking during a meeting with security officials at State House, Ruto said the country must accord private security officers the dignity they deserve.
“Private Security Officers sio watchmen ama security guards!” he stated, urging employers and the public to respect them as frontline workers in safety and crime prevention.
The President also pushed for full enforcement of the Sh30,000 minimum wage gazetted for the sector in November 2024, saying it cannot be business as usual while officers work long hours for pay that does not meet basic needs.
Ruto noted that many private security officers guard government institutions, schools, hospitals and businesses, yet some still earn as little as Ksh1,500 a month.
He directed the Private Security Regulatory Authority to ensure compliance and promised to include officers in the affordable housing programme.
Union leaders welcomed the remarks, saying officers face exploitation, risky conditions and lack of health cover.
For thousands of families depending on the job, the President’s statement signals hope for better pay, training and recognition.
