Rift Emerges Within Opposition

Hours after the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition’s Joint Council and National Executive Committee resolved to consolidate like-minded opposition parties, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka moved swiftly to initiate coalition-building talks.

Kalonzo hosted Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa at his Karen Command Centre, where the leaders discussed strengthening cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.

According to Kalonzo, the meeting focused on fostering unity among opposition outfits and building a broad-based coalition aimed at presenting a united front and offering leadership that reflects the aspirations of Kenyans.

However, even as the talks progressed, signs of discontent emerged within the opposition, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, leader of the Democratic Party (DP), former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, leader of the Party of National Unity (PNU), and Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) leader Lenny Kivuti criticised what they described as attempts by Gachagua to sideline other political parties in the region.

The three leaders called for a more inclusive approach to coalition-building, arguing that no single party should dominate opposition politics in the Mt Kenya region as efforts to unite government critics gather momentum.
