Keffe D Sentenced to 40 Years in Tupac Shakur Murder

Former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the rapper’s 1996 killing as his family welcomes a major step towards justice nearly 30 years after his death.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for his role in the 1996 murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing a decades-long investigation to a major turning point. The sentence was delivered on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by a court in Las Vegas, Nevada, after Davis was convicted of first-degree murder in August. Prosecutors accused him of organising the fatal drive-by shooting that killed Shakur, who was 25 years old at the time. The case attracted international attention because of the rapper’s influence on hip-hop music and the many years investigators spent trying to establish responsibility for his death.

The shooting occurred on September 7, 1996, when Shakur was travelling in a black BMW driven by Marion “Suge” Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records, near the Las Vegas Strip. The pair had attended a boxing match featuring Mike Tyson at the MGM Grand earlier that evening. After the match, an altercation involving Shakur’s associates and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, took place at the hotel. Investigators later linked the confrontation to the events that preceded the shooting. A white Cadillac pulled alongside Shakur’s vehicle at a traffic light, and occupants opened fire. Shakur sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Knight was also injured but survived. Shakur died in hospital six days later, on September 13, aged 25.

Prosecutors told the court that Davis played a central role in organising the attack, alleging that he supplied the firearm and helped coordinate the shooting in retaliation for the earlier confrontation involving his nephew. Although prosecutors did not accuse Davis of personally pulling the trigger, they argued that his involvement in planning and facilitating the attack made him criminally responsible for the murder. According to the prosecution, Davis and others travelled in the Cadillac before approaching Shakur’s BMW and opening fire. The prosecution maintained that the killing was connected to tensions between rival groups associated with the wider gang rivalry surrounding the hip-hop scene during the 1990s.

The case remained unsolved for nearly three decades, partly because investigators struggled to obtain sufficient evidence and cooperation from witnesses. However, the investigation gained renewed momentum after Davis began discussing his alleged involvement in interviews, documentaries and public statements. Prosecutors also relied on accounts associated with his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, in which he discussed the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s killing. Investigators argued that his statements helped them reconstruct the events of that night and identify his alleged role in the attack. Davis was arrested in 2023 following a renewed investigation by Las Vegas police. His arrest marked a significant development in a case that had remained one of the most widely discussed unsolved murders in music history.

During the trial, Davis’s defence team challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of his statements, arguing that he had exaggerated or fabricated stories about the shooting to gain attention and financial benefits. His lawyer, Michael Sanft, also questioned the strength of the evidence linking Davis directly to the crime, pointing to the lack of physical evidence independently placing him inside the Cadillac on the night of the shooting. The defence maintained that the prosecution had relied heavily on Davis’s own accounts rather than sufficient independent evidence. However, prosecutors argued that his repeated descriptions of the incident, together with other evidence presented in court, supported the case against him. After considering the evidence, the jury found Davis guilty of first-degree murder in August 2026.

During the sentencing hearing, Shakur’s family expressed the lasting pain caused by his death and called for accountability. His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, spoke emotionally about the loss of her brother and the future he never had the opportunity to experience. She described him as a caring person whose life had been cut short, leaving his family to live with the consequences for decades. His brother, Maurice “Mopreme” Shakur, also addressed the court, describing the devastating impact of the murder on their family. Their statements highlighted the personal cost of the killing beyond its impact on the music industry and the millions of fans who continued to celebrate Shakur’s work.

Judge Carli Kierny sentenced Davis to 40 years to life in prison, emphasising the seriousness of the crime and the lasting consequences of taking another person’s life. During the hearing, the judge stressed that Shakur had been taken away from his family and denied the opportunity to fulfil his future potential. The sentence consisted of a prison term for first-degree murder and an additional penalty associated with the use of a deadly weapon. Davis, who has maintained his innocence, indicated that he intended to appeal the conviction. He also asked for some personal belongings seized during the investigation to be returned. His legal challenge could therefore become the next significant development in a case that has drawn sustained public attention for almost 30 years.

Tupac Shakur remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history, remembered for songs including California Love, Dear Mama and Changes. Beyond his music, he was known for addressing poverty, racial inequality, violence and the struggles facing disadvantaged communities in the United States. His work helped shape discussions about the social realities experienced by many young people, while his public image and rivalry with other prominent artists became defining features of 1990s hip-hop culture. His death at the age of 25 shocked the entertainment industry and left questions about the circumstances of his killing unanswered for generations of fans. The conviction and sentencing of Davis have brought a significant legal development to that history, although the case may continue through the appeals process.

The sentencing marks a major milestone in the pursuit of justice for Shakur’s family, but it cannot reverse the loss suffered nearly three decades ago. For years, the rapper’s murder fuelled speculation, documentaries and public debate about violence within the music industry and the challenges of investigating high-profile crimes. Davis’s conviction represents the first criminal conviction in connection with Shakur’s killing and closes an important chapter in the long-running investigation. However, Davis’s planned appeal means further legal proceedings may follow. For Shakur’s family and supporters, the sentence offers a measure of accountability for a murder that has remained deeply significant to hip-hop culture and the public for almost 30 years.
