United Defeat Sparks Recruitment Crisis
Manchester United’s 2–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on October 13 has intensified pressure on manager Michael Carrick and the club’s leadership, after defender Lisandro Martínez publicly questioned the team’s recruitment strategy and squad strength.

Atlético made a flying start, with Pablo Barrios scoring within the opening minute. United attempted to respond, but efforts from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes failed to produce an equaliser, with Fernandes striking the crossbar.
United’s hopes suffered another setback in the 74th minute when defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review. Atlético capitalised on their advantage, with Ademola Lookman scoring in the 79th minute to seal a convincing victory.

After the match, Martínez questioned whether the club’s hierarchy had invested enough in strengthening the squad. He challenged technical director Jason Wilcox and argued that repeatedly changing managers would not solve the club’s problems without improvements in other areas.
The Argentine defender acknowledged that the players also needed to take responsibility for their performances. However, his comments highlighted concerns about squad depth and whether Carrick had received sufficient support to build a competitive team.

The criticism comes amid United’s difficult start to the season. The club had collected only six points from their opening six Premier League matches, their worst league start in 40 years, while struggling to deliver consistent results across competitions.
Although United made several signings during the transfer window, questions remained about whether the squad had been strengthened adequately in key positions, particularly at left-back. Injuries to players such as Luke Shaw have further exposed concerns about depth.

Carrick said he had not watched Martínez’s full interview and declined to comment extensively, choosing instead to concentrate on preparing his team for their upcoming fixtures.
Meanwhile, reports suggested Martínez’s concerns reflected wider frustrations within the dressing room about recruitment and the squad’s ability to compete consistently. His own future has also attracted attention, with his contract due to expire in 2027, although the club reportedly has an option to extend it.

United must now respond on the pitch when they face Leeds United on October 18 before travelling to play Como in Europe on October 21. The coming matches could prove important as the club attempts to restore confidence and ease growing scrutiny.
Ultimately, the defeat to Atlético exposed more than United’s weaknesses during one match. It has renewed questions about recruitment, squad depth and leadership, leaving the club under pressure to show that it can address its problems and return to winning ways.
