Police Order Tougher Road Crackdown

The National Police Service has ordered all traffic officers to intensify operations countrywide following a worrying surge in road crashes in recent days.

In a statement on Tuesday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the increase has left families grieving, with deaths, serious injuries and destruction of property reported across major highways.

He directed officers deployed for traffic enforcement and management to remain vigilant, professional and proactive while enforcing the law and protecting all road users.

Preliminary police reports show most crashes are preventable. They are linked to human error including reckless overtaking, speeding, driver fatigue, driving under the influence of alcohol, and persistent violations by boda boda riders such as riding against traffic and on walkways.

The Service said it will work with the National Transport and Safety Authority and other stakeholders to strengthen enforcement and public awareness, with targeted operations planned at known black spots.

NPS reminded Kenyans that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged motorists to observe discipline, avoid risky behaviour, and report erratic driving to the nearest police station or through toll-free lines 999 and 911.

Officials say the intensified crackdown will focus on unroadworthy vehicles, PSV compliance, and drink driving, as authorities seek to stop what police describe as needless deaths on Kenyan roads.
