DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto and his allies of plotting to amend the Constitution to replace Kenya’s presidential system with a parliamentary model, where the head of state would be elected by Members of Parliament instead of directly by voters.
Speaking during a church service at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Kinangop Constituency, Nyandarua County, before addressing public rallies in Murungaru Town, Gachagua claimed the alleged move is intended to make it easier to influence the country’s leadership through lawmakers rather than the electorate.
The former Deputy President also dismissed the government’s proposal to initiate the Vision 2060 national dialogue, arguing that it fails to address the pressing challenges facing Kenyans.
He said the country’s priority should be tackling the high cost of living, unemployment, and other economic hardships, rather than engaging in long-term policy discussions.
Gachagua maintained that Kenyans are looking for immediate interventions to ease their economic burden, saying national dialogue should not distract from addressing their day-to-day struggles.
