SpaceX has announced plans to build what it calls the biggest launch site on Earth $100 billion spaceport in southern Louisiana.
Unveiled on August 25, 2026, during an event in Abbeville with Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, the project is named “Starbase Louisiana”.
The facility will sit on about 125,000 acres of coastal land in Vermilion Parish, near Pecan Island, roughly 115 miles west of New Orleans.
The company says the complex is designed for high-frequency Starship missions to orbit, the Moon and Mars.
it could include five launch complexes with 10 pads, more than a dozen towers, and the capacity for over 30 Starship flights per day.
SpaceX is targeting construction to begin in 2027, with the first launch slated for 2029.
Beyond launch pads, the self-sustaining site would include methane propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing, employee housing, and possibly an airport.
SpaceX says it will invest at least $100 billion and create more than 3,000 jobs, with average wages 192% above the region’s current mean.
Landry called it a “transformational moment” for jobs and coastal protection. The company also pledged efforts to preserve wetlands.
