Apple’s much-anticipated AirPods with built-in cameras are reportedly still on track for release in 2027, despite a recent software leak appearing to show the unannounced device in action.
The camera-equipped earbuds came into the spotlight after references to the product, including a video showing the AirPods, were discovered in a developer version of a recent macOS software update.
The discovery initially fuelled speculation that Apple could unveil the new AirPods sooner than expected. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the company remains on course for a 2027 launch, with development challenges and supply-chain issues continuing to affect the product.
The earbuds are expected to use small, low-resolution cameras primarily for artificial intelligence features rather than conventional photography or video recording.
The cameras could work with Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology, allowing the AirPods to analyse objects and information in the user’s surroundings and provide context to Siri and other AI-powered tools.
The technology could eventually allow users to interact with their surroundings without having to rely entirely on an iPhone. For example, the cameras could help identify objects or interpret information in front of the wearer.
The reported design has nevertheless raised privacy concerns, particularly over the possibility of people being recorded without their knowledge. The concerns have intensified online following the leaked footage, although the reported cameras are not expected to be designed for taking conventional photographs or recording video.
Apple has not officially announced the camera-equipped AirPods or confirmed a launch date.
The product is therefore unlikely to appear at Apple’s next major product event, with current reports pointing instead to a 2027 release.
If launched, the camera-equipped AirPods would represent another step in Apple’s push to integrate artificial intelligence and environmental awareness into its wearable devices, potentially turning the familiar wireless earbuds into a new interface for interacting with AI.
