Rigathi Gachagua has written to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja asking for security guarantees ahead of a planned public rally, citing fears of possible disruption.
In the letter, Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, alleged there were plans to deploy individuals to cause chaos, vandalize businesses, and block access roads to prevent the meeting from proceeding.
He claimed similar tactics had been discussed in prior meetings, and asked the police to ensure officers are not used to interfere with peaceful gatherings.
The former DP pointed to his recent engagements in Kiambu and other counties as proof that his party’s events have remained peaceful, and urged the National Police Service to protect residents, supporters, and property during the rally.
Gachagua also warned that any violence should be blamed on police leadership if adequate measures are not taken.
He called on IG Kanja to act decisively, saying Kenyans deserve reassurance that reported threats will be handled professionally.
The National Police Service has previously advised politicians to notify police in advance of movements to allow proper coordination of security.
The letter adds to a string of correspondence from Gachagua to Kanja over the past year, in which he has raised concerns about safety at political and religious events.
