The death of a Kenya Airways pilot after a night out at the Nairobi West Prison Officers’ Mess has sparked a murder investigation, with detectives working to establish the circumstances that led to his fatal injuries.
According to a police incident report filed at Lang’ata Police Station, Kelvin Theuri Wachira, 33, was last seen on July 19, 2026, while socializing with friends at the prison officers’ mess. Witnesses told investigators that an altercation broke out during the evening before Wachira was later found unconscious outside the facility’s entrance along Lang’ata Road.
A good Samaritan rushed the pilot to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was admitted as an unidentified African male. Medical records indicate he was bleeding from the mouth and had sustained severe head injuries, prompting doctors to begin emergency treatment.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit has since written to Mbagathi Hospital requesting the deceased’s medical records as part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are also reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital, which shows Wachira arriving in a black saloon car, registration number KAP 199J. The driver, who identified himself as a good Samaritan, told hospital staff he was a security officer. Surveillance footage shows him remaining at the hospital briefly before leaving the facility about 7:30 p.m., after speaking to a nurse and a security guard.
Hospital records show doctors sought to transfer Wachira to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised intensive care, but no ICU bed was immediately available. His condition deteriorated despite resuscitation efforts, and he was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. on July 20, 2026.
A post-mortem examination established that the pilot died from blunt force trauma to the head, findings that prompted police to open a murder inquiry.
Investigators have documented both the Nairobi West Prison Officers’ Mess, where Wachira was last seen, and the location where he was later found unconscious. His white Mercedes-Benz, which remained parked outside the officers’ mess on the night of the incident, has been impounded at the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters for forensic examination.
Police say investigations are ongoing as detectives seek to identify those responsible for the fatal injuries that claimed the life of the 33-year-old Kenya Airways pilot.
