A fresh debate has emerged over proposed amendments to Kenya’s electoral laws, with political leaders and governance experts warning that the changes must not undermine transparency ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The proposals, which could alter how election results are managed and accessed, have sparked concerns among stakeholders who argue that public confidence in the electoral process depends on openness and accountability.
Critics say any amendments limiting access to election information or reducing transparency could erode voter trust and fuel disputes during the electoral period.
Supporters of the proposed amendments, however, maintain that the reforms are intended to improve the efficiency of election management while addressing operational challenges experienced in previous polls.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is expected to continue engaging political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders as discussions on the proposed reforms continue ahead of the 2027 General Election.
