2027 Polls to Proceed, Court Rules
The High Court has dismissed a petition seeking to postpone Kenya’s 2027 General Election, affirming that the polls will proceed as scheduled in August 2027.
In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, the court found that there is no constitutional or legal basis for delaying the elections, saying any change to the electoral calendar would violate the Constitution and undermine Kenyans’ democratic rights.

JUDGES
The petitioners had argued that unresolved electoral reforms, funding challenges and institutional preparedness justified postponing the polls to allow more time for the electoral process.
However, the court rejected the arguments, noting that the relevant institutions have had sufficient time to prepare for the elections and are constitutionally mandated to carry out their responsibilities within the prescribed timelines.
The judges further emphasized that administrative or logistical challenges cannot be used as grounds to alter the constitutional election schedule.
The ruling was welcomed by voters and civil society organizations, who said the decision safeguards Kenya’s democratic process and upholds the Constitution.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said it will proceed with preparations for the August 2027 General Election in line with the court’s decision.
