Now, a former insider is claiming he knows how one of those victories was secured , raising a chilling question, were the votes ever counted the way Kenyans believed? Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has reopened the 2013 election controversy with explosive claims about rejected votes and alleged manipulation of IEBC servers, days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta claimed that the late Raila Odinga actually won the 2022 presidential election.
Speaking on Inooro FM, Kuria appeared to respond to Uhuru’s remarks by taking the debate back to the 2013 presidential election. He claimed that a court battle involving himself and other politicians over the counting of rejected votes played a crucial role in securing Uhuru’s victory by preventing a runoff.
Kuria said he, Denis Itumbi and Florence Jematiah went to court to challenge the legality of counting rejected votes. According to his account, had the challenge not succeeded, Uhuru would have been forced into a runoff against Raila Odinga.
The former Cabinet Secretary went further, alleging that results were altered in the IEBC servers to help Uhuru avoid a second round. Kuria claimed he was involved in the alleged intervention together with then Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir.
The claims have opened a fresh debate over the credibility and transparency of Kenya’s electoral process, particularly with the 2027 General Election approaching. However, the allegations remain claims by Kuria and should not be treated as established facts.
Kuria’s remarks came after Uhuru said he remains convinced that Raila won the 2022 presidential election, despite the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declaring William Ruto the winner and the Supreme Court subsequently upholding the result.
