The United States has approved a potential $24.3 billion sale of F-35 fighter jets and related military equipment to Saudi Arabia, according to the US State Department.
The proposed deal includes 48 F-35 Lightning II aircraft with conventional takeoff and landing capabilities. It also includes 49 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines and other equipment and support services.
The State Department said the sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s military capabilities and support US national security and foreign policy objectives. Washington described Saudi Arabia as an important non-NATO ally and a key country for stability in the Gulf region.
If completed, Saudi Arabia would become only the second country in the Middle East to operate the advanced stealth fighters after Israel. The potential deal could therefore have implications for military capabilities across the region.
The United States is required to ensure that Israel maintains a qualitative military edge over other countries in the region. However, the State Department said the proposed sale would not change the military balance in the Middle East.
The announcement comes amid increased regional tensions and recent attacks on Saudi oil facilities and military bases by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. The attacks have raised concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and important shipping routes.
The US administration has formally notified Congress about the proposed sale, meaning lawmakers will now have an opportunity to review it. The deal will have to go through the congressional approval process before the aircraft and equipment can be delivered to Saudi Arabia.
