US President Donald Trump has faced criticism after posting AI-generated videos on Truth Social that appeared to show a major US attack on Iran’s Kharg Island, despite no such attack taking place.
Trump shared two videos depicting explosions and destruction on Kharg Island, a strategically important Iranian oil-export hub. In one post, he claimed the island was being “blown to smithereens.
”However, reports indicate that the videos were fabricated using artificial intelligence and did not represent a real military operation. The posts came shortly after the United States carried out rocket-launcher strikes on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
The development has raised further questions about the direction of the six-month-long conflict between the United States and Iran. Tehran reportedly responded to the US strikes by attacking two American bases in Jordan.
Trump’s posts also came amid growing concerns within the US military over the continued deployment of American forces to the Middle East. According to a classified August 14 report obtained by The Washington Post, senior military leaders warned that maintaining the current level of operations could place increasing pressure on US forces and weapons stockpiles.
The report reportedly showed that several senior commanders disagreed with orders requiring American troops to remain in the Middle East into 2027. The leaders of US European Command, US Pacific Command and US Southern Command, as well as the Navy’s top admiral, reportedly registered “non-concur” responses to the orders.
Despite their objections, the military leaders are expected to carry out the orders.Concerns have also been raised over the roughly 50,000 US troops kept on alert in the region, with military officials reportedly warning that maintaining such a force for an extended period could limit America’s ability to respond to other global threats.
The concerns come amid reports that Russia views the prolonged Iran conflict as evidence that the United States has been weakened by the war, particularly through the depletion of weapons and military resources.
Critics have seized on Trump’s AI-generated posts to accuse the president of presenting a misleading picture of the conflict. Richard Ojeda, a former West Virginia state senator and retired US Army major, criticized Trump on X, arguing that the president was portraying the war virtually while American troops faced real challenges.Geopolitical analyst Brandon Weichert also suggested that the leaks from senior military officials reflected growing alarm within the US armed forces over the possibility of further escalation.
The controversy adds to mounting pressure on the Trump administration as the Iran conflict continues, with questions growing over how long the United States can sustain its current military commitments and whether the confrontation could widen into a broader regional or international crisis.
