Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has run to court to stop his arrest over the deadly chaos that marred Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political meeting at Nembure Stadium in Embu.
The lawmaker moved to the High Court in Embu seeking anticipatory bail, saying police had laid siege to his rural home in Mutunduri since Sunday morning.
Justice Magare Dennis Kizito Ngwono certified the application as urgent,in his ruling, the judge barred police from arresting Mukunji until he presents himself to investigators.
If arrested, the court ordered that he be released on a Ksh.1 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Ksh.500,000 to be deposited by close of business on September 17.
He is required to report to the DCI headquarters in Nairobi on September 21 and on any other Monday as directed.
The MP has denied any link to Saturday’s violence, where police say one person was shot dead, several injured and six vehicles torched after rowdy youths tried to storm the UDA delegates meeting.
Through his lawyers, Mukunji says he is being made a scapegoat for standing with locals on sensitive issues, and is ready to cooperate with a fair probe.
