Kenyan diplomat Martin Kimani has been appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Africa at the United Nations, giving Kenya another senior position within the global organisation.
Kimani will serve in the United Nations Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, where he will be involved in matters relating to peace, security, conflict prevention and political affairs across Africa.
His appointment comes with extensive diplomatic experience, having previously served as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.During his diplomatic career, Kimani has been involved in discussions on international peace and security, African affairs and multilateral diplomacy.
The new position will see him play a role in the United Nations’ engagement with governments and regional organisations on political and peacebuilding matters across the continent.
Africa continues to face a number of political and security challenges, including armed conflicts, political instability, unconstitutional changes of government and humanitarian crises.
Kimani’s appointment therefore comes at a significant time for the continent, with the United Nations continuing to work with African countries and regional bodies to promote peace and stability.
The appointment is also being viewed as a recognition of Kenya’s contribution to international diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts.
Kimani is expected to bring his diplomatic experience to the new role as the United Nations strengthens its engagement with African governments and institutions on matters of peace, security and political stability.
