Kenyan Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has returned to the New York stage, taking the lead role in the latest production of Pre-Existing Condition at the Greenwich House Theater.
Nyong’o opened the production on September 14 and is scheduled to play the central character until September 26. The play explores the emotional, social and legal challenges faced by a woman recovering from an abusive relationship.
The actress has built an international career since winning an Academy Award for her performance in 12 Years a Slave. She has also appeared in major productions including Black Panther and Us, while maintaining strong connections to theatre.
In Pre-Existing Condition, Nyong’o plays a woman known simply as “A” as she attempts to rebuild her life after leaving a violent relationship. The production was written by Marin Ireland and directed by Maria Dizzia.
Her return has attracted attention from theatre critics, with reviews describing her performance as powerful and emotionally engaging. The production uses an intimate setting to explore trauma, recovery and the challenges survivors face after leaving abusive relationships.
Nyong’o’s performance is expected to continue until September 26 before other actresses take over the role as part of the production’s rotating cast. The show is scheduled to run through January 2027.
Her return to the stage is another major achievement for the Kenyan actress and continues to place African talent on the international theatre scene.
