Kenya’s national women’s netball team, the Kenya Divas, face a crucial test against Uganda on Tuesday evening as the two East African rivals meet at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi.
The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. East African Time and forms part of the 2026 Africa Netball Cup, which doubles as the African qualifying tournament for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney.
Kenya entered the tournament strongly, defeating Nigeria 61-40 in their opening Pool Two match.
The hosts led 19-9 after the opening quarter and 37-20 at halftime before completing a comfortable victory.
However, the Divas later suffered a 55-47 defeat to Malawi, increasing the importance of their encounter with Uganda.
Uganda are among Africa’s leading netball nations. They are ranked second in Africa and sixth in the world and have already secured their place at the 2027 Netball World Cup through their world ranking.
For Kenya, the tournament provides a direct opportunity to fight for one of the remaining African qualification places.
South Africa and Uganda have already qualified through their world rankings, leaving two additional places to be determined through the Nairobi competition.
Kenya are competing in Pool Two alongside Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and Nigeria.
Tuesday’s match therefore carries significance beyond local rivalry. A strong result would strengthen Kenya’s position in the competition while giving the Divas important momentum heading into the later stages.
Playing at home gives Kenya the advantage of familiar surroundings and support from local fans.
The Kasarani venue is expected to provide the team with a strong home atmosphere, but the setting also brings pressure because Kenya are competing in front of their supporters.
The Divas will need to respond to their defeat by Malawi and reproduce the attacking efficiency they demonstrated against Nigeria.
Their opening victory showed their ability to establish an early advantage, while the Malawi loss highlighted the importance of maintaining control throughout a full match.
Uganda present a considerably stronger challenge. Their international ranking and previous performances make them one of the leading sides in the tournament.
The Africa Netball Cup is being held in Nairobi from September 19 to 26, bringing together several of the continent’s leading netball nations.
For Kenya, the immediate objective is to recover from the Malawi defeat and produce a strong performance against their East African neighbours.
The encounter also provides the Divas with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to compete against one of Africa’s established netball powers while pursuing qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
With the match taking place on home soil, Kenya’s performance against Uganda could become one of the defining moments of their campaign.
